This area was the sleeping quarters for the crew. Thirty-six bunks fill this space, nearly half of the enlisted men slept here. The remainder of the enlisted crew slept in the forward and after torpedo rooms. Each man had access to a small locker. Below the crew's bunks is the after battery compartment. American fleet submarines had air conditioning, which made such close quarters relatively tolerable.
